Gastric dilatation-volvulus
(GDV) / Bloat

GDV is when the stomach flips. It IS emergent and is fatal if left untreated. It requires urgent surgery to correct. It happens mostly in large deep chested dog breeds. If you're a large breed dog owner, please keep reading!

The specific cause of GDV is unknown. Dogs are at an increased risk for bloat if they exercise right after eating or drinking large amounts of food and water. Please feed your dog small frequent meals or at least two meals a day vs one large meal to help prevent this and be sure to let your dog rest for about an hour or two after they eat and drink. There are other risk factors thought to cause GDV. Please consult with your veterinarian for sure if you have any questions or concerns about your furbaby.

Signs in the early stages of bloat can include:

  • restlessness.

  • pacing.

  • swollen or distended abdomen.

  • painful abdomen.

  • overall look of distress.

  • retching or attempts to vomit with no success.

  • excessive drooling.

  • panting or rapid breathing.

As a pet parent, you should always have a list of nearby ERs handy as you never know when you might need one.
