Cleaning Protocols Following Ringworm Illness:

Clean

Thoroughly clean the area where your fosters stay.

Fosters need to be kept in an area that can be easily disinfected, such as a bathroom. The most effective disinfectant is a fresh dilution of bleach at the following ratio: ¼ cup chlorine bleach and 2 ¼ cups warm water.

Rescue Disinfectant is also great to clean with!

Cleaning Protocol

  • Wash & remove all visible debris (feces, vomit, etc.) from objects.

  • Spray or wipe surfaces with the diluted bleach solution. Use only on objects not damaged by bleach. All items must be cleaned and disinfected (litter boxes, toys, bowls, brushes, etc. If an item cannot be cleaned with bleach, it must be disposed of.

  • Allow the bleach solution to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing the surface then repeat.

  • Allow the area to dry completely before allowing animals to return.

  • Rugs and carpets should be professionally steam cleaned if possible. If the rug is small enough, wash it in hot water.

  • All bedding, clothing, and other blankets that have come in contact with the infected animal should be washed in hot water and put through the dryer on a hot setting.

  • Do not use concentrate bleach or bleach straight from the bottle as this can irritate your eyes, nose, and skin and is not more effective than diluted bleach.

Treating Ringworm

  • Give two KetoHex medicated baths or dips per week

  • If using the Lime sulphur dip, it needs to soak into the fur and dry on the skin.

  • Once you bathe the kitten, place him or her onto fresh bedding with a heating pad on low to stay warm.

  • If using a spray bottle for the Lime sulphur dip, be sure to lather it in as you would with shampoo, never spray the kitten's face with it. Use cotton balls or a sponge and gently dab the face avoiding the kitten's eyes, nose and mouth.

  • When using the Lime sulphur dip, do not rinse the kitten, leave the kitten saturated in it, it will dry over time.

  • If giving oral meds, prescribed by a veterinarian, give only as directed.

  • Ringworm can take 5-6 weeks to completely treat.
